Roberts began his road racing career at Willow Springs in 1990, winning five races in his debut season within the 250cc class. By 1993, he made his World 500cc debut at Laguna Seca Raceway before becoming a full-time 250cc racer for the Marlboro-Yamaha team in 1994 and 1995. After moving to Yamaha's 500cc team in 1996, he finished 13th overall; when Yamaha did not renew his contract, he joined his father's Team Roberts in 1997. There, he spent two years developing the Modenas two-stroke bike, struggling to reach the front and finishing 16th in 1997 and 13th in 1998.

In 1999, Suzuki signed Roberts to their Grand Prix team. His debut race in Malaysia resulted in a surprise win against reigning champion Michael Doohan, followed by another victory at the Japanese Grand Prix where he defeated Doohan again. This streak positioned him as a strong contender until Doohan retired due to injuries sustained in Spain. The main challenge then shifted to Àlex Crivillé, who overtook Roberts' lead after the American struggled with consistency, securing only two more wins and four podiums. Roberts finished second that season. In 2000, facing rookie Valentino Rossi as his primary rival, Roberts found his rhythm with four wins and five podiums in 16 races. He clinched his first title at the Rio Grand Prix after finishing sixth, becoming the first son of a former champion to win the crown and breaking Honda's six-year winning streak.
